The 99 Domes Mosque, A New City Icon of Makassar

The masterpiece of a talented architect, The 99 Domes Mosque become the newest city icon of Makassar.

The Modul Nusantara is still continuing its journey in exploring South Sulawesi. At this time, the journey is moved to the city center area, which is Makassar. The destination is a mosque with unique architecture named The 99 Domes Mosque. This mosque is located in the Center Point Of Indonesia (CPI) area.

The construction process of The 99 Domes Mosque started in 2017 and was inaugurated in 2022. Since its inauguration, this mosque has been designated as the city icon of Makassar. The construction cost of The 99 Domes Mosque is huge, because the shape of the building is complicated and it requires a long construction time. It costs about 182 billion rupiah. The interesting fact is that the architect of this mosque is Ridwan Kamil, the Governor of West Java Province.

As the name implies, The 99 Domes Mosque has 99 domes. The number 99 is taken from Asmaul Husna, the holy name of God which there are 99 in the Islamic Religion. Besides being designated as the newest icon of Makassar, The 99 Domes Mosque is also the biggest mosque in South Sulawesi. This mosque has a building area of 3,240 cubic meters. Even though it has a large building, The 99 Domes Mosque is a fairly energy efficient building because it does not use air conditioning.
