Tana Toraja, The Land of Spectacular Nature and Culture

Carefully protected beyond the magnificent mountains and rugged granite cliffs, Tana Toraja is the land of unique nature and culture.

This another series of Modul Nusantara journey landed in a place that still upholds their old-beliefs and traditions. It is Tana Toraja. Tana Toraja is one of the regencies in South Sulawesi. The capital of this regency is located in Makale. Tana Toraja or commonly called Toraja, has a total area of 1.990 cubic kilometers, with a population of 248.607 people.

Tana Toraja is known for its spectacular nature. It is because most of its geographical locations are located at high altitude. The rice fields and trees spread out widely like a green carpet. The magnificent mountains and granite cliffs stand strongly, protecting the land that is full of uniqueness. Various natural tourism is offered, from hills, mountains, to waterfalls.

Besides its spectacular nature, Toraja is also well known for the unique culture. From many years ago until today, Toraja still adhere to their old beliefs, traditions, and rituals, although many of the people are already modernized. The Toraja people are believe that the rituals celebrate both life and death, can keep up the energy of land and its people. Most of the rituals in Tana Toraja are centered around graves and death ceremonies.
